The Monstrously Powerful RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 Gaming Laptops Ship Out Tomorrow

For those of you who have been patient enough to skip the RTX 30 series laptops in lieu of the RTX 40 variants, your wait is finally coming to an end. Amazon, Newegg, and Best Buy have select RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 gaming laptops up for sale, and they ship out starting February 8. These laptops promise to be one of the biggest gaming improvements we’ve seen from a single generation.

RTX 4080 Gaming Laptops for Sale

The RTX 4080 gaming laptops start at $2299 and they’re paired with 13th generation Intel Raptor Lake processors. Given how much more powerful they are than the RTX 3080 and 3080 Ti laptops, we think the $2K-$3K price point is reasonable. In Geekbench 5, a sample RTX 4080 equipped gaming laptop scored an OpenCL score of 178038 points. That’s about 30% faster than the average mobile RTX 3080 score. Compared to desktop variants, the mobile RTX 4080 approaches a performance level similar to the desktop RTX 3080. That’s pretty astounding, considering the RTX 3080 desktop GPU is still a very relevant card with the chops to run most games at 4K at 60+fps. Of course this is a synthetic benchmark and real world gaming difference may tell a different story, but this is promising news.

These GPUs are only worth it with higher resolution displays

Although there are some 1080p laptops available, we think an RTX 40 series card is wasted on such a low resolution. That’s because the current RTX 30 series cards can handle this resolution beautifully already. The sweet spot is QHD (or QHD+) because it’s still noticeably sharper than 1080p on a 16″-18″ display and isn’t as graphically demanding as native 4K. Even still, you’re going to appreciate the extra power that the RTX 40 series GPU offers to drive the higher resolution.

Mobile RTX 40 series GPUs also support DLSS 3.0

RTX 40 series cards also support DLSS 3.0, which is essentially DLSS 2.0 plus frame generation. For games that support it (like Cyberpunk) this is a massive FPS increase over even DLSS 2.0. It’s pretty much a necessity on ray-traced modern games.
