Eight several years back, Amy Stout of Petersburg bought a sailboat at a junkyard.

She spent a long time repairing it up and, final summertime, she did a thing only a single other lady has done so significantly: entire the Lake Erie Solo Challenge.

In August, Stout, 55, grew to become the 2nd female in the event’s 16-yr historical past to end the problem.

The 455-mile sailing function started in 2007. So far just 3 ladies have attempted it. The 1st a person, Gail Bowdish, sailed in the event’s early years and completed. She went on to total solo sailing difficulties on all of the other Great Lakes. A third girl attempted the Lake Erie challenge in 2017, but did not end.

Amy Stout is shown on her sailboat, the S/V Eloxy.

Paul Nickerson from the Lake Erie Solo Problem mentioned the challenge is challenging, and a good selection who start out really don’t finish.

“A full of 67 skippers have participated in Lake Erie, with a whole of 266 starts and 207 finishes,” Nickerson explained.

The reasons for leaving the obstacle are numerous.
